Developed in 1943, the 7.5cm PaK 40 auf Raupenschlepper Ost (RSO) was an attempt to create a simple, mobile anti-tank platform by mounting the proven PaK 40 directly onto the RSO tracked tractor. The design offered good cross-country mobility and a fully traversable anti-tank gun, but only a relatively small number were produced.

Combat deployment began in early 1944, with vehicles issued to German anti-tank units on the Eastern Front. The design was lightly protected and mechanically limited, but it provided mobile anti-tank firepower using one of Germany's most effective medium anti-tank guns.
