Introduced in 1943, the Panzer IV Ausf. H represented one of the most heavily produced and widely used versions of the Panzer IV. Improvements included increased frontal armour, the longer 7.5cm KwK 40 L/48 anti-tank gun and protective Schürzen fitted around the hull sides and turret. The skirts were initially intended primarily to provide additional protection against anti-tank rifles, while also offering some protection against shaped-charge weapons encountered later in the war.

The Ausf. H saw extensive service with German Panzer formations from 1943 onwards and remained an important part of Germany's armoured forces alongside Panthers, Tigers and assault guns through the later stages of the conflict.
