As the Panzer III's original anti-tank role was increasingly taken over by newer vehicles, the chassis was adapted for infantry support. Introduced in 1942, the Panzer III Ausf. N mounted the short 7.5cm KwK 37 L/24 gun previously used by early Panzer IVs. Its heavier high-explosive capability made it useful for supporting infantry and armoured formations rather than serving primarily as a tank-fighting vehicle.

The Ausf. N has direct equivalents in both Bolt Action and Flames of War. Flames of War specifically lists the Panzer III N with its 7.5cm KwK 37 gun, distinguishing it from the 5cm-armed Panzer III variants.
