The Panzer III Ausf. J represented an important development of Germany's main medium tank, incorporating increased armour while early production vehicles retained the 5cm KwK 38 L/42 gun. The Panzer III formed a major part of German armoured forces during the opening years of the war and remained important as the conflict moved into the Mid War period. Later Ausf. J production transitioned to the longer 5cm KwK 39 L/60, making the shorter L/42 gun a useful identifying feature of this earlier configuration.
